In an individual predisposed to atopic disease, the downregulation of the immune system and the tolerance induction is not efficient when exposed to different allergens. The individual becomes sensitized, with formation of IgE antibodies as well as recruitment and activation of inflammatory cells. Sensitization to allergens with formation of IgE antibodies often occurs early in life.
