In a sensitized patient, the IgE antibodies bound to the mast cells are cross-linked by allergens. Degranulation is induced and mediators such as histamine and other vasoactive amines are released and produce the allergic reaction. Allergic reactions are caused by sensitization upon exposure to an allergen with subsequent inflammation.
