Release of large amounts of mediators, e.g. vasoactive and bronchoconstrictive substances, may bring about an immediate severe generalized anaphylactic reaction. This systemic reaction, often of great severity, is always life threatening. The clinical symptoms occur within a brief period after the exposure to an allergen to which sensitization has previously been established.
