In Vitro - In Vivo

The sensitization process in the individual starts with exposure to environmental allergens and is followed by induction of IgE antibodies. A simple blood test to measure sensitization using the most common allergens for each age group, such as food in small children and inhalant or occupational allergens in older individuals, would provide valuable clinical information. Such a test, if reproducible and accurate, would correspond well with the most carefully performed clinical diagnosis made by a specialist.

When analyzing the precision of in vitro determinations of specific IgE antibodies, these may correspond better with the clinical diagnosis by the allergy specialist than with the results from in vivo testing. However, the in vitro and in vivo tests do not detect exactly the same substanses in the individual and should be regarded as complementary tests in the management of the allergic individual.
