Conjunctivitis, sometimes occurring as a secondary symptom of both infectious and allergic rhinitis, is characterized by intense itching and tear flow.
The clinical picture of allergic conjunctivitis is a diffuse conjunctival injection increasing towards the corner of the eye. There is no pain or visual impairment and the pupils are normal. Chemosis, marked thickening of the conjunctivae, and a family history of atopy suggest allergy as a cause.
